Capture the natural beauty of Waitomo on a private photography tour through a family-owned glowworm cave and the picturesque Mangapū Gorge.
Down to Earth Waitomo is located away from the main tourist crowds, while still being within easy driving distance of Waitomo Caves Village, Te Kūiti, and Ōtorohanga.
This private photography experience is designed for photographers who want more time, space, and flexibility to capture the landscape, cave entrances, limestone formations, native bush, and glowworm displays. Your group and your experienced local guide will be the only participants on the tour.
Photography tours are private tours available for one to four guests.
What Makes This Tour Different?
Unlike our standard cave tour, the photography experience places greater emphasis on the most scenic areas of the property, including the cave entrance and exit, native bush, and the spectacular glowworms.
These areas offer excellent opportunities to photograph:
The cave system beneath our family farm is one of only two in the Waitomo District classified by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation as being of international significance. It remains in a natural state, with no concrete paths or electric lighting.
More Time for Photography
Glowworm photography can be challenging and often requires patience, careful composition, and longer exposure times.
On this tour, you will have more time to set up your shots and work at a slower pace than on our standard experience. Larger cameras and selected photography equipment, including tripods, are welcome.
For safety reasons, photography tours do not enter every section of the cave system. The route is chosen to provide strong photography opportunities while allowing guests to move safely through the natural terrain.
All camera equipment must be carried in a backpack while walking between photography locations, as both hands need to remain free when climbing, descending tracks, or moving over uneven ground.
All cameras and photography equipment are brought on the tour at the owner’s risk.
Fitness and Mobility Requirements
This is a genuine outdoor and cave photography experience rather than an accessible viewing tour.
Guests need to be comfortable:
A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required. The tour is not suitable for guests with significant mobility difficulties.
Getting Here
There is no public transport to Down to Earth Waitomo, and pickup services are not available.
Guests must arrange their own transport and travel to the property by private vehicle.
This private Waitomo glowworm photography tour is ideal for photographers looking for a quiet, authentic, and unhurried experience in a natural cave environment away from the crowds.
