Drop 1) Maymorn Station

This is our most popular and recommended start point for a one day ride on the Remutaka Cycle Trail.

Maymorn to Cross Creek is ~25km. You pass through 5 Tunnels.

Maymorn to Featherston is ~39km. You pass through 5 Tunnels and finish at the Royal Hotel, a great place for a cold drink (Most popular)

Maymorn to Greytown is ~55km. You pass through 5 tunnels and will experience New Zealand's longest suspension bridge across the Tauherenikau River. Finish with a cool beer on the deck of  The Whiteswan Country Hotel, a Wairarapa icon.

Drop 2) Kaitoke

Kaitoke is a popular starting point for locals who drive with their own cars - often it is busy and crowded.

Starting at Kaitoke reduces the distances above by about 7km, and cuts out two short, sharp inclines.

What to expect

We start with a shuttle from Martinborough to Maymorn that takes around 40-60 minutes, depending on pick-ups.

From Maymourn you start with a short sharp incline, but the majority of the trail ascends with an easy 1:30 gradient.

You pass through up to 5 tunnels during the ride and may cross two spectacular swing bridges. Along the way there is native bush and pretty rivers with great signage that provide excellent historical information.

You descend from the Remutaka Summit Rail Yards to Cross Creek in Wairarapa on a steeper trail. It is still wide and well formed. Toward the bottom of the hill is a section of single track that some riders choose to dismount for parts of - it is easy riding with a couple of rough areas.

Riders can choose to use the road or off road trail to make their way into Featherston.

If you choose to continue to Greytown, expect quiet country roads and groomed cycle paths - marvel at the longest Suspension bridge in New Zealand.
